Brief Background

The Department of Power Engineering prepares highly qualified engineers in the field of hydraulics and pneumatics, heat engineering, thermal and hydropower engineering, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

The Department in its present form has existed since 2002. It is a successor of the Department of Fluid Mechanics, which was established in 1971 by Prof. Ventsislav Madzhirsky – one of the first rectors of TU-Gabrovo.

Currently, the Department staff consists of one professor, 3 associate professors, 4 assistant professors and 2 people supporting staff. Seven of the lecturers have academic ranks and one is a doctor of science. By 2012 six PhD students are enrolled in the Department in two scientific majors.

Since its foundation the Department has certified over 2,000 engineers who have graduated from both full and part-time programmes in “Hydraulics and Pneumatics”, “Power Engineering”, “Hydraulic and Pneumatic Engineering” and “Industrial Engineering”. Eleven doctoral dissertations have been developed and defended, eight ranks of associate professor and two full professor ranks have been obtained.

The Department staff strives to create attractive conditions for training and development of students, to use modern teaching methods, to update and introduce new subjects and to enrich the training facilities.

Starting from the 2012–2013 academic year students will be enrolled in the degree course „Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Gas Equipment”. Graduates of this major will be able to find professional realization as designers of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and gas systems.

The Department of Power Engineering is a major unit in conducting the training courses for professionals in the field of energy efficiency held at TU-Gabrovo.
